London Borough of Brent Case Study
Background Info
London Borough of Brent is one of London’s boroughs that has benefited from having Energy Solutions and ES Consultancy as long term partners in energy and sustainability matters.
We have been helping this particular borough find effective solutions to climate change for 10 years now, and have already a rolling programme in place to achieve a 20% reduction of CO2 (over 1995 levels) by 2012.
Areas of work
Our work with this particular local authority concentrates in four areas: strategic advice, project delivery, training, and fuel debt services.
For example, we chair Brent’s Sustainability Forum and are part of the Carbon Reduction Steering Group and Energy Team among other things.
In the area of project delivery and ahead of the CRC we are working with the Property & Asset Department to cut fuel costs and carbon emissions across all their state, including schools, mainly through Salix financed projects.
We have also delivered training on energy matters to most of their schools’ caretakers and have a rolling programme in place to continue doing so, extending this offer to school governors.
Finally regarding fuel poverty, we have a dedicated team doing home visits, giving energy efficient advice, and arranging free heating and insulation improvements all throughout the borough.
In addition to the above, Brent has commissioned a number of works in the borough aimed at reducing its carbon footprint with renewable energy, our specialism, for which they usually request our advice.
Benefits to the borough
Improvements in existing buildings carried out under the initiative of ES Consultancy mean estimated annual savings of £350,000 and roughly 2,500 tonnes of carbon per year.
We are currently in charge of continued engagement with schools and delivering on roughly 60% of Brent’s carbon targets for 2012.
Most recently we have transformed an unused chapel into a state of the art eco-office at Welsh Harp, which is now part of Brent’s Environmental Education Centre.
We have also helped Brent with the requirement for Display Energy Certificates (DECs) coming as a result of the EPBD. We assessed all the buildings over 1000 m2 (just over 100) and produced the necessary DECs and Advisory Reports.
Furthermore, thanks to doing the DECs with us London Borough of Brent has now got a wealth of data that is helping to establish the carbon baseline for the Carbon Reduction Commitment and several National Indicators, (ie NI 185).
ES Consultancy has develop a method to effectively collect and collate Brent’s energy data, and most importantly a relationship with the agents involved, whom, in the case of schools, are sometimes hard to reach.
Thoroughly researched technologies and recommendations that can be implemented throughout most buildings in the borough, considerably reducing the LA’s carbon footprint as a whole.
